Dr. Fasano Discusses Leaky Gut with Dr. Peter Osborne

 

Leaky Gut Syndrome Dr. Fasano, leader of the University of Maryland Celiac Research Center, and I sat down for a private one on one interview. We discussed gluten sensitivity vs. celiac disease, leaky gut (intestinal permeability) and leaky brain, research on newly discovered gluten proteins, and mental diseases (schizophrenia, bipolar, depression). These issues have been under great scientific debate and scrutiny as of late.

A big take away message from Dr. Fasano –

Your gut is not like Vegas. What happens in the gut doesn’t stay in the gut.

He discussed the certainty that gluten sensitivity can cause mental disease (see one of the connections here). This has been a along debated topic. We have been publishing information on this connection for a long time. Finally, mainstream researchers have confirmed this connection and put the debate to rest. Additionally, Dr. Fasano discusses how gluten causes leaky gut syndrome and allows food proteins, pathogens, and other chemicals to gain access to the immune system and blood stream causes wide spread disease in other areas of the body not related to the gastrointestinal tract (gut)…non celiac gluten sensitivity.

  3. The liver
  4. The joints
  5. The muscles
  6. The thyroid gland
  7. The pancreas…and so on and so on…

  1. Thank you! Keep up the great work. Anger, desperation and frustration are what I felt when following a Paleo diet upon my gluten sensitivity diagnosis. However, it was Dr. Osborne’s expansive knowledge of the gluten beast & how healing works that helped. His advice was to practice patience as sometimes it takes 2-3 years for a person’s digestive system to heal. After many ups and downs plus a continual battle of losing weight, (got down to 114 on a 5/6″ inch framed body & went from size 6 to size 0 in clothing), today I weigh 123lbs, can wear size 2 to size 4 clothing and overall, my health is finally healing just like you promised (almost a little over the 2 year diagnosis mark). Thanks Dr. O!

  2. I have been gluten free for over a year and dairy free for about 4 months. I do not drink any carbonated drinks or eat any corn. I still have terrible stomach problems and cannot figure out what is causing them. Do you have any suggestions?

    you can try an elimination diet, and gradually add back foods. over a period of 1.5 years, I found I not only have sensitivities to gluten and dairy, but also tree nuts, peanuts and sesame. Also look for hidden sources of gluten…like soy sauce, natural flavors… there are so many of them, it is possible you are still getting gluten even if you are on a “gluten free” diet.

    Thank you for all of your hard work and knowledge!! Keep it up and spread the word! I do not understand for the life of me why a man like Dr. Fasano who KNOWS how toxic ANY gluten is for a Celiac or Gluten Intolerant can advocate ‘up to 20ppm’ is ‘safe’ for the majority of Celiac’s?? He admits in this video how much still is unknown about the full damaging effects of gluten….and yet in his video at the Center for Celiac Research site he boldly states that ‘some’ gluten is fine and making the standards too stringent for levels of gluten allowed will make less packages available and make travel inconvenient? Wow. He should be shadowing YOU in your practice, helping people who have been failed by the mainstream GF eating advice and who are still so sick. Perhaps then Dr. Fasano would truly get the big picture and change his tune to ‘NO GLUTEN IS SAFE’.
