A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine identified an autoimmune process in osteoporosis.  We have known for years that many patients with celiac disease develop osteoporosis.  Is there an autoimmune process at work in these people?  This might explain why heavy supplementation with calcium and vitamin D has failed to adequately address this issue.
