What is the function of the gallbladder? What Happens When It is Removed?

When the gallbladder is compromised it can lead to acute pain in the right abdomen and other symptoms such as shoulder pain, diarrhea, clay colored stools, headache, fatigue, and nausea.

The gallbladder is a very important organ attached to your liver. The function of the gallbladder is to store the compound bile. Bile helps your body to properly emulsify and digest fats from your diet. This includes fat soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K. It also includes the essential omega 3 fats.

If the gallbladder becomes blocked by fall stone formation, the symptoms above can manifest. The pain for some is so great that they end up in the ER. Often times this results in being told to have gallbladder surgery (cholecystectomy).

Having your gallbladder removed can contribute to deficiencies of these important nutrients over time. This in turn can increase the risk for cancer, heart disease, and a number of other degenerative conditions.

Another important function of bile is that is helps to bind toxic compounds in your GI tract and prevents them from entering your blood stream.

If you have been told that you need to have your gallbladder removed (gallbladder surgery), consider a gluten free diet. For many, a diet change is the solution to a healthy liver and gallbladder.

Additionally considerations for a healthy gallbladder…
Vitamin C, choline, and taurine are nutrients that support healthy bile production and flow.
