What are the best natural things that you can take to help your immune system stay strong during this time? This is a question that comes up a lot.
What can you do to kind of bolster and support your immune system strength? What should you be focused on or maybe be thinking about this? The top question I’ve had in the office all day long is what can I do to make sure my immune system stays in tip top shape. There are a number of different supplements that are very, very crucial and critical for this.
Number one is vitamin C. If you’re not using vitamin C right now, I highly recommend that you do. Now as far as vitamin C supplements are concerned in this scenario, if you’re really trying to get a quick bolster to your immune system, my advice would be to use a powder over a pill.
One of my other go to is vitamin D. And again, if you are due for a doctor’s office visit or if you’re going to the doctor, request that they measure that vitamin D. You want to make sure your levels are between 70 and 100. A lot of doctors get scared with vitamin D; they’ll tell you it’s fat soluble, so it’s toxic in higher doses. This is not a toxic level. Again, the only contraindication here for somebody to take a high supplemental quantity of vitamin D would be if you had a kidney problem. So don’t do that if you’ve got a kidney problem.
Now another one is vitamin A. Vitamin A is involved in a number of functions that help to improve and regulate immune system function. Vitamin A helps to recruit and helps activate white blood cells. Vitamin A is also a barrier vitamin. What do I mean by that? Vitamin a is necessary for epithelial cell regeneration. So your epithelial cells are the cells that coat and line the different linings that serve as barriers. Your skin is an epithelial barrier. Your GI tract is an epithelial barrier. Your lung tissue, the coating is a epithelial barrier. Your urinary tract is an epithelial barrier. These are tissues and vitamin A is required for those epithelial barriers to regenerate. And if you don’t have adequate quantities of vitamin A and you’re not getting good barrier function, then you’re exposing yourself.
So again, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin A, L lysine. Now there are a couple of others as well. Elderberry is tried and true. There’s number of numerous studies on using elderberry extracts, but elderberry has a number of different effects on the immune system, including up-regulating certain types of immune cells that are known to help you fight viruses. What you have to be careful with is a lot of the elderberry products have sugar in them. So because they’re syrups. So they’ll, you know, a number of companies create elderberry syrup. Elderberry is best taken in my opinion in capsular form where you don’t have the added sugar to create the problem.
Echinacea is another very potent one.
Again, there are no guarantees and I don’t want to be up here saying, if you take these things, it’s impossible for you to get sick. We have to apply common sense. Hand-washing and just good hygiene practices are also very crucial.
