Autoimmunity, Gluten, & Osteoporosis

A new report in the New England Journal of Medicine identifies antibodies against osteoprotegerin (a protein that prevents bone breakdown) in several patients with celiac disease.  This protein is responsible for helping maintain bone density.  When it is attacked by the body’s immune system, bone loss becomes accelerated leading to osteoporosis. Schizophrenia and Celiac Disease Linked

Research continues to link schizophrenia to gluten sensitivity/intolerance: Another study demonstrates that patients diagnosed with schizophrenia have higher levels of antibodies to gluten.  In this study, researchers found that schizophrenics had a tendency to have elevated tTG (tissue transglutaminase) levels. Gluten Proteins Pass into Mother’s Milk

Poison Breast Milk!? The following study demonstrates that the gluten protein, gliadin, passes into the breast milk of lactating mothers.  Breast feeding mothers were given 20 grams of gluten.  Their samples were then analysed for the presence of gluten.  Peak levels of gliadin were identified 2-4 hours after ingestion of gluten. Gluten Free Diets Help Psoriasis

Patients suffering with psoriasis commonly improve dramatically on a gluten free diet.  The following  research study found that people with psoriasis also had elevated antibodies to gliadin (wheat) and tissue transglutaminase (an enzyme antibody linked to celiac disease).   The authors conclude that psoriasis and non-celiac gluten sensitivity are associated. Schizophrenics Have Elevated Immune Reaction to Gluten

Research by Drs. Reichart and Landmark discover elevated IgA antibodies to gliadin, beta-lactoglobulin, and casein in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia compared to non schizophrenic controls.
